My Big Idea is hosted by The Biz Foundry, a nonprofit organization designed to act as a catalyst for entrepreneurship and innovation in the Upper Cumberland region. The Biz Foundry is based in Cookeville, Tennessee and works exclusively with entrepreneurs and startups in the Upper Cumberland region. The Biz Foundry is dedicated to helping all participants of My Big Idea.

My Big Idea is a youth innovation and idea generator program that was created and launched in 2017 by The Biz Foundry. This hands-on program takes the students through business idea generation, idea evaluation, and business model development. Each program ends with a 24 Hour Grand Finale event where teams prepare a business pitch to present to a panel of business-veteran judges in hopes of winning cash prizes.

Mission

The main idea of this program is to show kids in rural areas they are not limited by where they live. Some of the greatest minds have come from rural places, and we want to make sure to spark that fire in those that have it. Innovation and entrepreneurship can thrive in a rural area.

Goals

We want to cultivate passion, generate ideas that can become innovativesolutions to problems, and teach the skills to build and execute ideas. We also aim to teach youth how to present their ideas and solutions to the public. In the end, we hope to leave students with pride in having done something real and meaningful.

The Process

My Big Idea begins with an after-school meeting once a week for participants. Participants will meet once a week for four weeks. Each week, a different topic.

Week 1

Spark excitement, learn to see problems, discover your role, and learn to be innovative.

Week 2

Discover the basic framework for evaluating good ideas, and learn how to use the business model canvas.

Week 3

Discuss findings from customer discovery and how to use that info to find the best fit solution.

Week 4

Learn how to make money and make strategic partners.

Each program ends with a 24 hour grand finale event where students pitch their business idea to a panel of judges and compete for cash prizes.
